SUMMARY:"Weaving our Future" basketry workshop series
DESCRIPTION:FlyerWOF \nThis is a special series of workshops to connect indigenous and non-indigenous women through the practice of basket weaving\, on the Sunshine Coast\, Australia. \nParticipants attending workshops will learn basket weaving techniques that are practical and useful\, with fibres from plants that grow locally. These skills will be used to create harvest baskets based on traditional and/or contemporary forms\, with an emphasis on creativity and innovation of forms to suit the needs of modern society. In ‘Weaving our Future’\, community members will learn where\, how and when to harvest a selection of fibres sustainably and how to store and prepare these fibres for use. Yarning is an integral part of this process\, where every participant will be given a voice and a nurturing space to share\, where all are honoured for their individuality and their part in the dynamics of the group. Indigenous and non- indigenous knowledge is given a place to thrive\, encouraging new ideas to emerge. Introducing traditional knowledge holders from Arnhem Land (Kunwinjku women) will add to this experience for deeper cultural connection and knowledge sharing (Karrimarnbun). \nThis knowledge exchange project will explore the overlap between traditional bush food harvesting\, fibre and the baskets used to harvest food and fibre\, honouring both traditional and contemporary perspectives. Participants will create both artworks and cultural artifacts\, in an attempt to revive\, revitalise and reinvent an endangered art form. The project is stage one in a larger vision – the establishment of a local ongoing (intercultural) weaving group\, working towards cultural connection and creative exchange opportunities with remote Indigenous weavers. \nTuesdays and Thursdays from 1st February. Two date ranges with techniques working concurrently. \nDates are thus: \nTuesdays \, Thursdays: \n6 Feb           1 Feb \n13 Feb         8 Feb \n20 Feb         15 Feb \n27 Feb         22 Feb \n6 March       1 March \n13 March     8 March \n20 March 22 march – Dale Chapman \n8 May Headspace Maroochydore  10 May Deadly Espresso \nTwo more days TBA and self-help group time – also\, days are flexible according to technique (same technique\, two different days). \n$150 for the series of workshops. $25 per session if attended individually. Save over $50! \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/weaving-our-future-basketry-workshop-series-tickets-41095210882 \nThe Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Sunshine Coast Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.\nThis project is proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council’s grants program.

SUMMARY:Weaving Books
DESCRIPTION:Weaving stories\, weaving books – expression of interest \nRene Bahloo of Weavery is inviting expressions of interest to attend a woven artists book workshop series at Wallace House in July/August. This callout is to gauge public demand for the project which involves adapting natural fibre weaving techniques to create a small sculptural (woven) artists book\, which will exhibited at Wallace House during the Noosa Open Studios event in August. \nThis is an expression of interest only\, no money will pass hands at this time. \nNo commitment is being asked for\, I am asking if you would be interested in this type of experience\, if everything aligned to allow you attendance. Please ‘purchase’ a free ticket to keep in the loop and show your support for the project. Thnaks so much! \nThis project will be focused on a specific outcome – the creation of a woven ‘artists book’ by each participant\, which can be then exhibited at Wallace House and/ or the local Noosa Library exhibition space\, during next year’s Noosa Open Studios event. \nThese workshops will apply natural fibre basket weaving techniques in new and innovative ways to allow the creation of a unique and individual artist’s book by each participant\, who can incorporate their own pre-existing skills in novel ways. Eight different weeks will aid the creation of eight different ‘pages’\, allowing participants to engage at their own level\, using natural fibres as well as other materials such as recycled objects\, paper prints\, photographs\, clay\, sewing materials etc. During this time\, four different weaving techniques will be taught\, as well as how to adapt them to the format of an artists book. \nWe will also engage in the healing practice of sharing with each other through talking circles – telling stories\, sharing feelings and experiences with participants – in order to flesh out our stories and those we find in common.
