Weaving is Healing Sunshine Coast 13 Sept 2025

https://WeavingIsHealingSunshineCoastSept25.eventbrite.com.au

Welcome to Weaving is Healing! Join us for a day of growth, creativity and connection as we come together to learn the art of weaving. Coil weave technique. This in-person event will take place on Sun, 13 September 2025 at Weavery HQ, on the Sunshine Coast, near Buderim. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced weaver, this event is perfect for anyone looking to unwind and tap into their creativity. Come and experience the therapeutic benefits of weaving as we spend the day surrounded by nature and good company. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to relax, learn, and create something beautiful! See you there!

This will be a space to learn to weave a basket with natural fibres, straight out of your garden, or the bush. We will also weave ourselves together in loving connection, intentionally and mindfully. Coiling and twirling our fibres into a form of beauty and wholeness. This is not your ordinary craft workshop, its a gentle, fluid and fun form of facilitated therapy focused on growth and grounding, safety and belonging.

10.30am till 3.30 pm. $120 pp

The workshop will be conducted through means of a ceremonial space where you will be nurtured in a circle of like-minded beings, sharing and breathing and creating together.

This is an opportunity to experience the ancient art of basket weaving as a deeply joyous and contemplative practice. It is a space of sharing, creating, being and breathing, conducted through ceremony and celebration of life. Using natural materials from the land, you will learn to weave individual strands of fibre together to form a whole creation, while recognising and acknowledging the patterns, mirrors and metaphors that bind us together with nature and each other.

Like a weave within a weave, this has the power of revealing a way of being that is nurturing, growthful, enlightening and honouring of the energy of creation. Together we will weave baskets that hold in their fibres all of the stories we share, flowing in symphony with the songs of nature as they unfold around and within us.

Please something savoury to share for lunch, and your own plate with cutlery.

Pandanus fibre will be available to buy on the day, if needed for future weaving projects or expansion of your current one.

Bio:

René Bahloo is a creator and facilitator of ceremonial spaces that are rooted in the healing power and wisdom held within the ancient art of fibre weaving. Through her lifelong interest and pursuit of knowledge that draws us in closer relationship to our soul and subsequent experience of aliveness, René walks with a philosophical and practical understanding that speaks to the magic (and music) of the weave of life, available in each present moment. This is a magic that is often hidden by our perceptual filters, yet it exists regardless, and is a deep source of freedom, joy and healing waiting to be recognised and consciously engaged with, like a beloved friend. René facilitates workshops and spaces where she weaves with the fibre of these strands of knowledge and wisdom in a way that is multidimensional, in honour of the fractal patterning of the creative universe. Her work is also very practical and down-to-earth, using plant materials and basket weaving techniques to illustrate and enhance understandings of spiritual concepts which in turn promote connection and open-heartedness amongst participants, in a fun and lighthearted, yet profound manner. René’s background as a qualified visual artist and psychotherapist, as well as her extensive life experience with (and deep ongoing connection to) Indigenous shamanic/earth-honouring families and cultures, enhances her intellectual, creative and spiritual capacity to speak eloquently to this interconnected weave of life.

Note: René claims no Indigenous heritage herself, rather, she is a bridgemaker and walker between tribal humans coming from a deep heart-based and relational standpoint.

René brings you a gift: a direct demonstration and embodiment of the experience of her own aliveness, and beautiful fallible humanness, through radical honesty as well as authenticity to the moment, and inspires us to remember, to love and to honour all parts of our soul expression in the world, no matter how they show up, in the spirit of ‘already being whole’.

Tickets are transferable but not refundable, within a one-year period. 48 hour notice required. Workshops are subject to numbers.

Tickets can be booked through Eventbrite, or by emailing to organise a direct deposit / cash. (direct deposit bypasses the eventbrite fee).

Weaving is Healing Retreat Adventure Rainbow Beach Feb 2023

Five days of weaving with natural fibres, in the company of like-minded women. Five days – adventure, soul whispering, beach driving, creek dipping, fibre spotting and trekking in paradise. René Bahloo of Weavery at the helm, in her trusty 4×4, Beasty Babe the troopcarrier.

Laughter, irreverence and joy… and silence, diving deep into the stillness of being, together. Meditative and contemplative practices of inner noticing, teamed with nature at her finest, to encourage and support healing while being deeply nurtured in circle with others. And time for self, to settle back into the grounded foundation of core truth.

What weaving will you learn?

You will learn to use lomandra and prepared pandanus (harvested, split, boiled and dyed) to weave a larger piece in a two-strand twisting technique native to Rene’s motherland, South Africa. The universal practice of string-making will also be shared, and there will be opportunity to learn a coiling technique.

We will discover and identify a variety of local flora, as weaving fibres, while traversing the land together.

How else will you spend your time?

Adventuring in Beasty Babe, beachside and bushside, with your weaving in hand. Yes, swimming is on the cards, if the weather is appropriate (bring your floaties, folks!). Sunday is a day off, where you are offered free time to sink deeper into yourself at your own pace. On this day there is the option to traverse the channel on the ferry for island time, with your hostess. This is not part of the retreat but is offered at no extra cost if you choose to be company.

There will also be time to experiment with eco-printing using leaves, flowers and roots in a well-brewed black dye pot, on white or light coloured fabric (bring your own). Adventuring does not remain with this external experience. It can be a deep-dive within, as time is spent in counsel together, sharing in circle. You will be invited to engage with focused intention, in nature. This can be through eco-therapy exercises and practices that can open up a way for deep communication with your soul-self, within the natural world, in peaceful yet growthful solitude. As much as there are juicy and deep treats in store for you (more than I can write here) you have ultimate say about how you choose to spend your time. Just sitting on the beach, weaving, if that’s what your soul seeks. Wind tickling your hair, sun caressing your face.

Sound good?

Sweet. So, what kind of accommodation is planned?

A holiday house in Rainbow Beach, a few minutes from the ocean, with varying room options, and a pool. Kitchen, lounge and deck, nature outlook. Room options are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The accommodation payment serves as a booking fee, and will secure your spot on the retreat. It is non-refundable. The remaining contribution cost is payable by the 24th January 2023.

It’s a partly catered experience: three evening meals will be provided so we can eat together, but you will need to provide your own breakfasts and lunches. One evening we will go out for dinner, together, locally (at your own cost).

Price for retreat (single) is $965.

How big will the group be?

There is place for a maximum of seven humans. This lends to a great group dynamic as we carve our way into the flow of a slower way of being, gently noticing and allowing the experience of present moment awareness to unfold. This is a together-walk, an intimate immersion into the weave of life and fibre, for healing and soul-tending.

Come with me, as we walk ourselves along this magnificent path.

If this feels good, please make contact. It is anticipated that spots will fill fast. Your contribution to the costs of the experience will secure your place on this expedition.

What else to bring?

An open heart, swimmers (for healing waters, and the swimming pool).

A white shirt or pillowslip to ecoprint in the black dye pot.

A willingness to learn and have fun. A curiosity about life, and what else is possible in this amazing experience of aliveness.

Minimum numbers apply.

One-day workshop with Indigenous weaving elders from Arnhem Land 2

This workshop is a day-visitor opportunity to join our main event:

Weaving camp with Arnhem Land Indigenous elders 2021

at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/weaving-camp-with-arnhem-land-indigenous-elders-2021-tickets-147392776763

This opportunity is for you to join us in a day-workshop with the weaving elders from Arnhem Land, on-site in the Northern Territory. We will weave together for a couple of hours, before we will open our circle for a few more hours to more weavers through the eyes of an online zoom link. The workshop will end with a sharing circle.

The main event – camping immersion blurb:

Spend a week camping in a beautiful location, abundantly planted with weaving and medicinal plants. Learn from the Indigenous elders how to use these plants for dye as well as to prepare materials for basket weaving, before you relax together and weave a basket under their watchful eyes. In joyful conversation, learn about the medicines that thrive in nature around you, and in the nurturing container of sacred space, sit in deep contemplation of life, self and existence. Engage in a process of deep enquiry through fun daily forays into the energetics of healing and wholing, through nature-based practices and sitting together in council.

This is an opportunity to deepen in relationship with your soul, together with other like-minded humans. To sit with traditional Australian weaving elders, and commune as equals, while being embraced by the natural world that so profoundly supports your being.

Rough outline of main activities:

– Day trips to gather pandanus fibre and dyes.

– Learning to prepare dyes and fibre

– Learning to weave with pandanus fibre

-Morning/evening sharing circles

-Nature/ soul practices

-A day trip to a Litchfield national Park waterhole/waterfall

-Camping and cooking in communal village style with basic amenities and camp kitchen.

– Possibility for 2 workshop day visitors on the weekend.

– Online three hour weaving circle and Q & A on Sunday, by zoom.

This week-long deep-dive will be facilitated by Rene Bahloo, who brings with her a wealth of life experience walking alongside Indigenous Australian as well as African elders and healers. She is a weaver of life, a ‘medicine weaver’, a fun-filled and quirky human of lightheartedness yet much depth of being and knowledge just waiting to be shared. She will interlace the weave of this transformative and healing journey with nature connection practices, deep sharing circles and energetic alignment practices that enhance and expand your sense of meaning and aliveness.

This immersion/ camp is the result of a way of being that favours an attitude of flow and creative manifestation, in surrender to the current circumstances involving Covid and in consideration of the needs and safety of remote communities. This has ignited the emergence of this new format and location away from the communities but close to everything else that makes these trips so transformative. It is also an opportunity to introduce ancient practices of soul awakening and nurturing from a shamanic and eco-psychology perspective, Rene’s passion and present focus of study.

Rene’s previous journeys allowed participants to enter and experience aspects of remote community life, first hand, under the wings of local traditional weaving elders. These journeys have been placed on hold for 2021, and are anticipated to recommence in 2022.
