This is a special opportunity to share a weekend of with traditional weavers from Arnhem Land as they journey to the Sunshine Coast in Australia. These special weavers travel once a year to Weavery HQ, where Rene Bahloo hosts them as part of her family, to share their culture, hearts, stories and traditional weaving practices with the wider community. They will share knowledge on fibre preparation, natural dyes and weaving techniques in this weekend. This is so much more than a weaving workshop for sharing and learning techniques, it is an opportunity for healing through the telling of stories, sharing song, learning language and culture from a remote community in the Indigenous Australian bush. It is a nurturing and safe space to ask questions, relax, have fun and immerse yourself in a new energy as you create your own basket with naturally dyed pandanus fibre straight from the homelands.

It is anticipated (preferred) that participants will attend for the whole weekend, though there are limited spaces for drop-in attendance of a single day.

Friday 2pm-5pm – pandanus fibre stripping and splitting and dyeing

Saturday 10.30am – 3.30pm – traditional weaving – (please bring your contribution to a shared lunch)

Sunday 10.30am – 3.30pm – traditional weaving continued – (please bring your contribution to a shared lunch)

All materials included.

$390 entire weekend.

Bring lunch to share

Learn to weave – in a ceremony-style basket weaving circle where each member of the group is honoured for their own special contribution to the group in a gentle, nurturing manner. It is an open-hearted, fun and growthful experience for the beginner and experienced weaver alike, a creative space full of shared wisdom and joy.

Use plants that grow in your vicinity, learn the characteristics of the fibre so as to identify and play with other fibres that suit the technique, as you walk your path onwards.

Weaving with both Arnhem Land and Djabugai weavers

This is a special opportunity to share time with traditional weavers from Arnhem Land and from Far North Queensland who are on a visit to the Sunshine Coast in Australia for cultural sharing.

These six special weavers all travel once a year to Weavery HQ, where Rene Bahloo hosts them as part of her family, to share their culture, hearts, stories and traditional weaving practices with the wider community.

This is an opportunity for healing through the telling of stories, sharing song, learning language and culture. It is a nurturing and safe space to ask questions, relax, have fun and immerse yourself in a new energy. This indigenous weaving and sharing circle will utilise lomandra and raffia as primary fibres for creating baskets and woven jewellery pieces.

This daytime workshop is offered as a fundraiser to contribute to bus hire, artists fees and flight tickets for the following weekend’s project at Barambah. (The weavers will all go on to connect with women from the stolen generation at Barambah (near Cherbourg) for a really special healing weekend of cultural rejuvenaton and transference of knowledge between the three indigenous groups. (SEQ, Arnhem, FNQ).

Sit in circle with weaver and artist Rene Bahloo and engage in deep contemplative, creative practice with natural fibres. You will be guided to weave a basketling which in turn will become a reflection of the weave of your self, your experience and your path of learning. Weaving is a practice which engages mind, body as well as spirit, and invites the wisdom of the weave to speak through your hands and hearts, in a safe and nurturing circle space.
